Rehabilitation Services
Therapy plays an important role in managing muscular dystrophy (MD) and other neuromuscular conditions. It can help maintain physical function, joint flexibility and mobility, while addressing stiffness, discomfort and other secondary complications that may occur as muscles weaken over time. Therapy may also support respiratory function and independence in daily activities, contributing to overall quality of life.
MDAS offers a range of rehabilitation services tailored to individual needs, with a focus on:
* Maintaining and improving physical function
* Enhancing mobility and joint movement
* Supporting respiratory function and endurance
* Promoting safe participation in daily activities
* Supporting independence and quality of life
Our rehabilitation services primarily support MDAS members with muscular dystrophy and other neuromuscular conditions. Selected services are also available to individuals with other physical conditions and members of the public, subject to assessment and suitability.
Our services include Physiotherapy, Cybernics Therapy and BIXEPS.

Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy aims to maintain muscle function, flexibility and joint range of motion, while reducing stiffness and helping to delay secondary complications such as contractures.
Our therapy team provides individualised exercise programmes and movement strategies based on each individual’s needs and abilities. Therapy focuses on supporting functional abilities, comfort, mobility and long-term well-being. Progress is regularly monitored and overseen by our physiotherapist to ensure that therapy remains safe and appropriate.

Cybernics Therapy (HAL Single Joint)
Using the Hybrid Assistive Limb (HAL) Single Joint device, Cybernics Therapy is a robotic-assisted rehabilitation technology that supports voluntary movement of individual joints at the wrist, elbow, knee and ankle.
The device detects bioelectric signals generated by the user’s intended movement and provides assistive support to facilitate controlled flexion and extension. This allows users to actively participate in guided movements during therapy and may support muscle activation, movement coordination and joint mobility.
Cybernics Therapy may also be suitable for individuals with other physical conditions, such as spinal cord injury, stroke and cerebral palsy, subject to assessment and suitability.
Please note: Participation in Cybernics Therapy requires assessment and suitability review by a therapist.

BIXEPS
BIXEPS uses MitoCharge™ technology and low-energy electromagnetic fields to stimulate muscles and support muscle activity with minimal physical exertion.
Each session lasts approximately 10 minutes. BIXEPS may be used as a complement to therapy and exercise to support muscle activation, circulation and physical function, particularly for individuals who may find conventional exercise challenging.
BIXEPS may be suitable for older adults, individuals with reduced activity levels, those experiencing knee discomfort, and persons with neuromuscular conditions, subject to individual suitability.
Please note: BIXEPS is not recommended for individuals with pacemakers or for those who are pregnant. Please inform our team of any relevant medical conditions or implanted medical devices before starting treatment.
Other Services
Occupational Therapy
Occupational Therapy services are available on an ad-hoc basis to support individual functional needs. This may include strategies to improve upper-limb function, recommendations for assistive equipment, and guidance on adapting activities at home, school or work.
Sessions focus on promoting independence and enabling individuals to participate more safely and effectively in their daily activities.
