BACKGROUND

The Muscular Dystrophy Association (Singapore), MDAS, is a self-help organisation formed in March 2000. It is committed to uplift the lives of people with Muscular Dystrophy.

Launch of MDAS in year 2000 Muscular Dystrophy is the name given to a large group of muscle diseases characterised by the development of muscle weakness, wasting and contractures, that are usually progressive and sometimes life threatening. These diseases often manifest in childhood, although some begin in adulthood. Most, if not all, are caused by a large variety of inherited gene abnormalities. At present, there is no cure for Muscular Dystrophy.

MDAS understands the challenges faced by people with Muscular Dystrophy and their families. MDAS extends its membership privileges to all children, youth and adults with Muscular Dystrophy as well as their families.

OBJECTIVES

To provide care and support to people with Muscular Dystrophy;
To provide health and public education on Muscular Dystrophy; and
To support medical research on Muscular Dystrophy

MISSION STATEMENT

To maximise the quality of life of people with Muscular Dystrophy and their families, to integrate them into society and support research towards a cure.

RATIONALE FOR LOGO

The logo of the MDAS encapsulates the hope and the joyful upliftment that will arise for its members when the able-bodied in the community lend their support.

The vibrant colours of orange and blue reflect the Association's aspiration to enhance quality of life for its members and to promote integration with the mainstream. The graphic, shaped like a heart, captures a relationship of mutual caring and rapport between the able-bodied in the community and the Association that will enable members of the MDAS to lead meaningful and satisfying lives.

The logo also symbolises our belief in people and their potentiality. Hence, we take pride in the services and programmes we are endeavouring to provide for our people with Muscular Dystrophy.
